It has been a long time since I have read anything by Image Comics, but I am finding myself highly amused by the comic book Sex Criminals. At least amused enough to finally get around to writing the glowing review that it needs to have; I have been remiss at times with reviews. The Blurb is funny enough, but that really does not do the comic the justice that it needs. See this is a funny comic book, irreverent, and what would you do if you could simply stop time by having sex? What if both of you could stop time by having sex? They head on off to start robbing banks, but it ends up being oh so much more than just robbing banks. And while they compare the book to the 40 Year Old Virgin et al, no, it is not like that, the comic book is actually funny.
Not to disparage on anything coming out of Hollywood, but have you seen a movie lately? Reboots, redo’s, and nothing original. At least this comic book saw the potential in the story line and said screw it, let’s go have some fun with the story line. From the Image Comics Blurb we get:
Suzie’s a normal girl with an extraordinary ability: when she has sex, she stops time. One night she meets John… who has the same gift. And so they do what any other sex-having, time-stopping, couple would do: they rob banks. In the vein of THE 40-YEAR OLD VIRGIN and BRIDESMAIDS, Image Comics invites you to come along with MATT FRACTION (Hawkeye, SATELLITE SAM) and CHIP ZDARSKY (Prison Funnies, Monster Cops) for the series that puts the “comic” back in “comics” and the “sexy” back in “sex crimes.”
Ah yes, they do bring the sexy back, and the crimes back, and the funny back, and overall one of the more amusing and interesting comic books I have read lately.
I am going to rate this one flat out 5 of 5 stars because it simply rocks all the way around the story line. You can purchase this as a digital comic on Amazon, or the paper dead tree product on the Image site, or via your local comic book store that is probably not doing that good right now because there are digital comic books all over the place. But yeah, go get it, sit back, pop some popcorn, put your feet up, and laugh till it hurts. This comic is that good.
