Ok, usually anything written by Gail Simone is going to make me happy, and this one did not disappoint. If you have an important woman in comics, Gail is right up there as either the number 1 or number 2 most amazing voice in comics, period. Ok all you trolls feel free to argue, then go back to your mothers basement and shit talk world of warcraft while eating death junk food. Red Sonja number 1 gets a whole remake on this issue with Gail and Walter bringing a little Prince Valliant, and a lot of poor grammar and speech patterns to the entire Red Sonja universe. This is a pretty sweet way of looking at what the Red Sonja world could be without the usual writers and cast of artists that went before. This is like getting a decent reboot of the series, even if the conversation will make you crazy. Oh and check the two guys in the dungeon, that is pretty awesome when they get rescued because they are beyond human in this issue. The short blurb from the publisher on this one states:
THIS IS IT. Red Sonja gets a fresh new attitude by the dream team of writer GAIL SIMONE (Batgirl, Birds of Prey) and artist WALTER GEOVANI (Prophecy, Witchblade), on the book they were born to create. Sonja pays back a blood debt owed to the one man who has gained her respect, even if it means leading a doomed army to their certain deaths! This thrilling new series features covers by the top female artists in the industry, including Nicola Scott, Colleen Doran, Jenny Frison, Fiona Staples, Amanda Conner and more. You do NOT want to miss this re-introduction the She-devil with a Sword!
This is a pretty sweet comic book all the way around, and is worth a 5 star rating. The art is awesome, the conversation is period and has the right feel. There is plenty of action, violence, sword play, and general mayhem to keep every fanboy in a basement happy. There is also something here for the ladies, it is pretty well rounded even if we have to suspend the rules of gravity for Red at times. Well worth picking up and reading either the digital or print copy. This one is going to be fairly easy to find, we were able to find it at two comic book stores downtown, so it will be in wide availability if you have a comic book store in your neck of the woods.
