Allen Keeg was your average middle age heart broken sap going through the worst break up in his life, after she walked out the door a year ago. Since the break up, Allen has been having trouble getting back into the swing of things unable to get over her. However, all that is about to change. When Allen saves an old woman from being mugged, he is given an amazing supernatural ability that will change his whole life, the gift, or what some may consider the curse of being completely irresistible to every female that crosses his path.
The simplest way to describe Irresistible would be the male version of the 1992 Sandra Bullock film Love Potion No. 9. I really enjoyed this first issue; I feel it is one of the most realistic portrayals of the male point of view when it comes to a broken heart. The writer really captures the process of getting over someone flawlessly, as someone who has went through some rough break ups I found myself heavily relating to this book early on and in turn developing a strong attachment and interest in the books main character.
The portrayal of Allen’s friends is spot on, with their typical philosophy of the best way to get over girl is to jump into bed with a new one, which may work for some but for guys like myself and like Allen is not a solution by any means. Haunted by a heart that truly wants to be appreciated and loved, this first issue gives off the vibe that while at first Allen may enjoy his new powers, that later on they will become a curse as he is the type that wants true love over pure lust.
Watching Allen make the same mistakes that many men make in terms of getting over an ex really makes this book relatable to practically every guy on the planet, I really appreciated this point of view since it is usually presented through the eyes of a female.
On top of the often poetic and at times hilarious writing, this issue also features some eye catching and rather unique art direction. I am hard pressed to think of another book that features a similar art style with its attention to small detail and ability to really emphasize human emotions accurately.
Readers looking for something different should give this four issue run a chance, the prefect blend of laughs, love, and friendships. I highly look forward to reading the next issue and following this story to completion. As a fan who has long tired of spandex wearing superheroes, I cannot recommend this series highly enough. Once gain Zenescope brings comic fans an original and thought provoking take on an aspect of life everyone last one of us will experience at some point. Irresistible is a fitting name because after you sit down with this first issue that is exactly how the rest will seem.
