As much as I’ve been enjoying Jennifer Blood, I also find myself losing interest somewhat quickly. With the amount of great series’ out right now, and this one falling short on so many levels in comparison to other vigilante tales we are seeing today, I find myself questioning the purchase. It’s shown as if its happening in present time but, written as if its already happened. This takes away a lot of the build up and anticipation for her revenge. Oppose to seeing characters interact we’re just getting certain, random points and I kept telling myself this story has more to offer, it’s freaking Ennis!
Thankfully, issue three was quite satisfying. We get a slight glimpse in the potential future of our lovely lady vigilante at a housewarming party for the new neighbours, Jack approaches Jen in a unfashionable way and her reaction is quite hilarious – I don’t think he’ll make any inappropriate advances to women anytime soon. I’m hoping Jack becomes more of a main character in issues to come, he seems like quite the bastard and there’s nothing more entertaining than that!
Oh, and of course, there’s another gruesome death of one of the Blute Boys.
Garth Ennis is a great writer unfortunately I find myself at a cross-roads of to read or not to read. If you’re a fan of Ennis’ work thus far I still think it is worth a go. I reviewed the first two issues closer to their release and quickly fell into the ‘buy buy did not read’ trap. I have them all to date and only 3 in. So, for the sake of my many spent dollars, I really hope this issues a good omen for what is to come.
Batista’s art thus far has been great throughout, his sketchy style brings a certain presence to Jen I don’t think another artist could portray. Alongside him is Marco Marz’s work, which also happens to be amazing. Now that we know what Jen is about I’m glad to see her almost as a cartoon character, there is a bit of realism in his work, but not comparable to Batista’s. It almost brings a lighter more fun presence to the story.
All in all, this issue ripped 6.5 out of 10 feet of intestines from my stomach. I want to like this story but, it isn’t holding my attention the way i had expected it too. But, there is always hope! At this point in the series though and without knowledge of the battles to come, I would have to say I would only recommend this to a big fan of Garth Ennis, you may get lost and disinterested if you aren’t.
