It’s been a while now since we were originally introduced to Poyo, the worlds most notorious, kick-ass rooster. Now, through the same minds that brought you this homicidal, cybernetic, rooster machine the first time, they bring you an all new epic spin-off one-shot comic in regards to our favourite little terrorizer. Not only are we getting a whole lot of obscure fun in this issue but, also the joy of giggling at their dedication to the ever clever David Lapham (Assumingly for the homage paid in a particular death scene that is similar to that of one in Dan the Unharmable) AND several hilarious and gorgeous pin-ups of Poyo by artists such as: Zach Howard, Ben Templesmith and many more! My favourite being Templesmith’s brutal ‘Vengeance be thy cock’ submission, this image holds true to Poyo as the manliest rooster alive, just as you’d imagine he’d be – kicking butt day and night, taking no names, handing out no apologies.
Reincarnated as part machine by the government and at risk of their entire power supply, Poyo the rooster is known from the start to be the most rage filled, bad ass rooster with zero regrets and a knack for always coming out on top. He quickly becomes every government’s go-to bird for worse case scenarios thus, he has seen and survived the space war of Moustaches, torn up hell and had Satan begging for mercy, travelled with a team of hero icons any would be envious of, and even manages to temporarily find love! Yep,
Poyo has seen it all. The real and the unreal. All that was left for him to experience was flying at mach 5 speed through a manic scientist’s head!
Guillory did a spectacular job of bringing Poyo’s life to the panels! Every image is more over the top than the last, embracing just how weird they can go with a character like this. Colours are vibrant, intense and really catch your eye – it’s no wonder they manage to sell this story so well! When you take an artist as unique and silly as Guillory, pair him with a mad genius like Layman, who has proven himself to be even more so over these last few issues, you really really can’t go wrong.
They have found their niche and target audience quite quickly and reader word-of-mouth still spreads strong today. Chew will be a series that sells strong straight through to the end and if you are one of many fans and haven’t picked up this special issue I pity you for the enjoyment you have failed to receive. New comers are always welcome as well though, as Layman does an excellent job of catching new readers up in a subtle fashion that barley phases older readers and often even reminds us of abilities and characters they haven’t featured in awhile.
Secret Agent Poyo gets 10 terribly painful and eventually deadly pecks to the eye out of 10. This was the best idea in the comic world since Marvel‘s decision to launch a Deadpool Max series a few year back! Poyo will win over new and old fans alike. There are laughs to be had for all and ridiculous topics you won’t get enough of, this is a MUST buy.
