We pick up where we left off with Ichabod Jones number 2, where our folks have escaped possibly the mental asylum. While Ichabod used the intestines of the monster to get out of the cave, upon escaping the group finds itself in a barren wasteland post-apocalyptic area with nothing but a broken down bus, and a need to get out of town. Ichabod hot wires the bus drives it a few blocks and promptly wreaks it which lets the gigantic sand worm suck down Ichabod like a length of spaghetti. The group of survivors left behind is wondering what to do while Ichabod is fighting off larvae, tape worms, and a vat of stomach acid in the belly of the beast. Surprisingly though Ichabod finds a sword, that looks remarkably like Excalibur, the legendary sword from King Authors days. Needless to say, lots of blood, some quick thinking an dancing and Ichabod has cut his way out of the sandworm to meet back up with the survivors of the mental home.
Fleeing from the area, they end up in a small deserted town, looking for coffee and junk food to refuel for the next leg of the trip. But you know what is going to happen; they will not quite make it, as the final panel of the comic book as the group looking down the barrels of guns and people who are looking more like an angry mob than wanting to help the escapees. Like the first two, you do not know if this is taking place in Ichabod’s brain, or if this is happening in real life. Odds are highly likely that as you read this, you are thinking that this is happening in Ichabod’s brain rather than anywhere else. The surprise to all this is that this leaves the reader wondering what world we are in, and that is what is keeping me on my toes as I read this series.
Much like book 1 and book 2, there is a lot happening, and a lot of interesting insight into Ichabod. This book though sticks with the survivors without any flash backs to the mental home making me think that there really is an escape attempt happening in the real world that is colored by the dream land that is Ichabod’s brain. This one is so worth getting and reading that it isn’t even possible to think anything else. I am enjoying this series immensely and again, like books 1 and 2, it is so worth getting. Get two copies, one for reading, and one for collecting. This story line is simply awesome.
