Codex has a major beef with luck. Thing is, luck never comes her way and it seems the destruction of her already dysfunctional relationship with Trevor proves that her lack of natural fortune won’t be changing any time soon. Her social life is a bust, her therapist thinks she’s hopeless and the man she truly adored – gay. What is the only thing Codex doesn’t seem to screw up? The integrity and support of her newly formed guild, of course!
After witnessing the kiss between Trevor and his band mate, Gunther, Codex began a mental debate no woman could solve without damaging her sanity: Did she turn Trevor gay? Should she believe in his claims of curiosity? Or is that just a load he’s serving her so she continues her free labour for his band? Oh, the possibilities!
After much debate and being the spastic, nervous, naive person that she is, Codex willingly continues to see Trevor AND complete his bands music for a set. Her intentions change, however, upon arrival to the show when Trevor is caught fooling around on her, yet again. In a metaphorical transformation from Trevor’s Bitch too Syd, Codex burns the music sheets, dooming his band to fail and releasing herself from his abuse.
This is the prelude to The Guild every fan hoped for! All of Codex’s recent past is covered as we get a detailed, brutally honest flashback of her early gaming days – the ones they speak so clearly of throughout the seasons. There is nothing more wonderful than a successful transition from video to comic. The Guild truly feels as though you are watching the show and experiencing this all with Syd first hand. The art is engaging and bright, counteracting the more negative aspects of her life and making it feel okay to laugh at her misfortune. Not to mention the hilariously accurate and relatable introduction of ‘the game’ into Codex’s life and it’s progression to full control of all her time.
If you are a fan of The Guild and haven’t picked up this series yet, you are truly missing out and should catch up on the action soon! If you are unfamiliar, familiarize yourself. There are rarely regrets when it comes to a quality comic that houses a ton of laughs!
