Taking a breather from Tony, this issue focuses mainly on Olive, his daughter, and her newly formed alliance with her father’s greatest enemy, Mason Savoy. In an attempt to train Olive and ensure she masters her abilities, Savoy throws a curve ball when he makes her drink a great fighters blood in the form of a milkshake in order to see if she would absorb his capabilities. When a bullet coming straight for her during a chocolate weapons raid is dodged easily, Savoy’s absorption theories are proven correct and have also saved her life.
With her new powers in mind, and a freshly lasered Xocoscalpere (someone who can build anything out of chocolate with such great detail that the item becomes fully functional) in her grasp, Olive takes a bite and begins carving.
This is by far the best issue of Chew yet! They really jam packed the humor in this one with ridiculous, yet, brilliant plot points, true chocolatiers, and “Kirkmanly” posters – which, by the way, was featured in what is now my favorite panel in any single issue.
I thoroughly enjoyed the spotlight being on Olive, she is a great character and Tony’s greatest threat. Watching her develop her abilities well beyond that of her father’s is terrifying and exhilarating all at once. What ever happens in the next installment and final part of Major League Chew will blow minds, a promise made in the back of the book and one I believe. With a build up like this and Tony still in a crazy sports reporters custody, it would take a lot of it not to be great!
I recommend this series to just about everyone I meet, and I would be a fool not to recommend it to you. In case you haven’t noticed by the rest of my Chew reviews, this is my favorite series by far and I cannot see that changing in the foreseeable future. What Guillory and Layman have created with this book is awesome and is most definitely worth your time.
5/5. Give it a go, no regrets.
