Fighting Yamako-chan Now that the Other Worlds project is 200% funded we were trolling around (politely) Kickstarter this morning and noticed that another comic we love has a Kickstarter Project that is worth following and taking a look at. Our reviewer Andrew Shurping took a look at the initial comic book and thought that is was a worthy story line, and an interesting way of hooking the reader into the series. It has an Anime feel, but is American in tone and story line. Where else are you going to find a bowl of rice playing a pivotal part in a comic book?

There are 28 days left to the project to raise $5,000 and this would be a project worth looking at and making a donation to keep it going. This would be a good project, and Comics Forge is donating out of our pool for this project. As Tom Ramirez states on the Kickstarter site:

Fighting Yamako-chan is the tale of a Samurai’s daughter and how a giant sward, a jar of ash and a bowl of cold rice lead her on a journey to battle creepy assassins, insane feudal lords and discover why her father had betrayed his duty.

Yamako of Zarayama started as just one of a cast of characters I had made for an Asian-fantasy role playing game. Her appearance and mannerisms were odd and her often naive worldview conflicted heavily with many social expectations. Eventually, reasons had to be conjured to justify her existence. Yamako’s offbeat personality was such that to be who she was, she had to either live under a rock or far atop one. She then required a reason to live on a mountain and finally, a reason to leave. From there, excuse turned into purpose and a story began to unfold.

This project’s chief goal will be to have all thirteen issues published and then converted into graphic novel format. To accomplish this, I will be using hand-drawn sketch compositions overlayed in Illustrator with a combination of brush and pen tools. After coloring, finishing touches will be rendered in Photoshop. Rinse and repeat, multiplying by 28 pages an issue and 13 issues. So far, three issues have been published and are available as digital download.

Honestly this is a cool comic, and we have reviewed it positively. The Kickstarter project for us is just another way of showing Tom our love. You should consider donating as well.
