Chew is one of those books you embarrassingly laugh aloud at on the city bus, in the library, and just about any other public place one shouldn’t be seen laughing alone. Everything about it screams “I’M A GOOD TIME!”, and it never once goes back on it’s word. Filled with laughs, suspense, terror, and disgust, Chew, is a book just about anyone can love – and love it you should.
In International Chew we meet again with Tony’s now cyborg-esque partner, John Colby. After being ‘killed-off’ in issue one by way of flying meat clever, it was nice to see John return and the awkward tension brought along with him was even nicer.
Tony has his partner back and he is ready for some action – even if it involves a strange fruit that tastes like chicken. Now finding himself knee deep in family problems and waist high in FDA business, Chu couldn’t wish for anything more than to catch a break. Maybe with a lucky lady?
There are many great characters introduced in this trade, to many to mention really, but, what I will say is that there is everything from vampires and chicken-fighters to family involved – making for a very thrilling, yet, relatable book that will keep you on your toes.
What Layman and Guillory have created here is a masterpiece, for sure. Layman this knack for taking a completely insane and wacky plot and turning it into a believable and in-depth world that makes you question your future whilst still making you laugh. I don’t know about you, but, not many recent works had the ability make me feel so many emotions at once.
The art is bright and exciting, even better than that of the last trade. You can tell that Guillory is becoming much more comfortable with the characters he has created and the proof of his love for the is noticeable in his art to say the least. Every panel he draws seems to come with the intent to somehow make the reader laugh. Whether it be through background imagery or it’s main focus, he always successfully receives a grin at minimum.
I love any book that I can tell it’s creators themselves adore, and Layman & Guillory truly love this book. The proof is written all over these pages, each made perfect with that added dash of care and foolishness.
Pick this one up if you enjoy the sillier side of life. 5/5
