If you haven’t seen or heard of Felicia Day’s hit web series “The Guild” then it is likely you have been living under a rock. If that is the case, I welcome you to a new world filled with awesome plot lines, references and laughs. I welcome you to The Guild, aka your newest obsession.
This three-issue comic run acts as a prelude to the series first season – one that, although unnecessary, sheds a greater light on Codex and explains her introduction to the The Game and those she would soon call guild mates.
In this issue, through Codex’s character, we meet Bladezz and Vork. Two future best friends and current annoyances. Bringing down your gamer wrath upon the noob in your group is quite common in any MMO, but, what makes Codex’s experience both original and enticing is that these people, although rude, actually seem to enjoy her presence; a feeling she has not experienced in quite some time. Through this new found acceptance we watch Codex become a much more confident version of herself in game and in real life.
When I first bought into this comic series I had many fears: What if it was all random and detached from the show I love so dearly? What if the characters are portrayed wrong? What if it just flat out sucks? All questions that feel so pointless now.
What I have come to find whilst reading this issue is that I have nothing to fear as long as Felicia is the one controlling the plot. It is made very apparent she will not ruin her baby (“The Guild”) under any circumstances nor will she sell the story out. So thank you Miss. Day, it has been a pleasure to read your work.
The art, although very plain and simple, could not more appropriate for this series. Codex isn’t a fancy person, in fact no member of the guild is, so the art reflecting that aspect of the series makes for an impeccable and completely relatable read.
All in all, if you love “The Guild” as a web series – pick this up.
If you have never heard of “The Guild” before, here is your perfect starting point – pick this up.
If you have no interest in fun stories with relatable characters – don’t pick this up.
5/5 – Perfection.
