Shadow Plague Part 1: Bad Day
Taking a humorous and mystical approach to our modern obsession with zombies and the apocalypse of, Dungeons & Dragons dives right into it’s new beginnings with a fun-filled, action-packed first issue. One that, I might add, anyone remotely interested in the game would be a fool to miss.
Fell’s Five is back from their previous mission and cannot seem to catch a break. Within moments of their arrival and just as Tisha signs her contract to join the group, they are attacked by a mass of zombies. After killing one and everything suddenly turning back to normal, the local authorities accuse them of unjust murder. An accusation that by way of faulty portals and crazy old men they manage to prove faulty – that or their holders turn into zombies. I guess you’ll just have to read and see.
Can I just say that I LOVE this series? Although I am only now reviewing issue 1 this is a series I am up to date on and adoring. Re-reading this issue for a review reminded me of the humble beginnings by which this massive tale that I devour monthly has become in it’s more recent issues. The sense of humour in the writing has got to be one of my favourite aspects though. It makes for a very welcoming and easy to follow story that pushes you into some very in depth D&D lore without you even realizing it – GREAT for folks new to D&D.
Alongside the great writing also comes some very unexpectedly great art. Di Vito has a knack for facial expression which really helps bring a realness to the tone in which you read these characters speak. Which then, of course, draws you deeper into the plot and what these people/dwarves/other mystical creatures are going through, adding a very addictive quality to the series. The landscapes are tremendously done as well; in a mystical based comic I had high expectations for what the backgrounds would look like and they were easily exceeded.
There are only so many ways to say that is comic is great. So I’ll just say “Buy It.” and hope you listen. Happy reading.
