This was a surprise to me, western comics are usually a hard sell for any reader, but after reading this I was pleasantly surprised by the entire book. I was disappointed by it being in black and white, but otherwise the story was engrossing and easy enough to follow along. This book is a lot longer than what we usually get, so you get more of the story line for the same price. The story is about a bounty hunter, a villain, a noble sheriff, and the return of one of the more interesting outlaws in the wild west. The nice part is that the outlaw has no nose, so the deformity works, and makes the outlaw more loathsome to many people who are going to read this book. It looks like “No Nose” Velasquez follows in the fine tradition of people who are evil have some deformity because they are evil. The book does not feel like the typical western, in some ways there are vestiges of other styles of writing which makes this a more compelling read in the longer run and a cut above the average western comic book.
Lettering, inking, and grey tones are all good, and shows up easily on the Ipad I used to read this comic. It would have been cooler in color, and I feel sorry for the horse that got shot in the butt and died. No Nose is really simply wrong, a bent twisted person, and it makes it easier to identify with the Sheriff and the Bounty Hunter throughout the book even if they do some things that are cringe worthy in terms of what they do to keep the town safe, but then how do you deal with panicky people? Some of the comic book did not feel right, again this is not written like a traditional western, so it makes it very different to read online. That might be one of the biggest issues with readers, it does not follow the standard formula for a western, for some this might be awesome, for others we might really be looking for the formula even if we do not realize we are doing that.
Overall not that bad, rating this one 4 of 5 stars because it is compelling, the bad guy is truly identifiable, but the good guys also have their own issues. Missing color, but read well and easily on my mobile device of choice. Worth reading once, not sure if it is worth hunting down in print if it exists in print and making it part of your collection. It is a cut above the average western comic book, so it is worth checking out.
