Following perfectly from its previous title, Kick-Ass2 continues the journey of Dave Lizewski trying to find his place in the super-hero community created in the first series. Mindy (Hit-Girl) is attempting to live a double life, training Dave on the side to become a better hero and staying clear of becoming a hero herself. While Mindy is with her god-father Marcus, she is to have nothing to do with these “crazy people”.
Now that Dave is on his own he searches the internet for other heroes to patrol the streets with. While on duty one day with a costumed hero he encountered named Gravity Man Dave learns of a super team being created and wants in, badly.
Mark Millar is a great writer, although with all the hype that came with Kick-Ass I was unsure if this title would really match up or add more to this character (Dave) I got so attached too. The first issue was definitely a great read, but, I was expecting more. Millar almost grasps at the outline of the first series to build the second, we get a short look ahead in the story than Dave’s quick description explaining he’s gone to far ahead of himself and he needs to get back to the beginning. I enjoy Millars work but I felt with such a strong following in the first Kick Ass title he would have had more up his sleeve when deciding to continue the series.
Romita’s artwork is simple but extremely eye-catching. There is something about his style that always draws me to read titles he partakes in. I’ve dipped my toes in a lot of bad series because Romita’s art and a lot of good ones as well – this issue being in between the two extremes.
Kick Ass2 is an enjoyable read, but, it wasn’t as strong as the first issue of the first title or any other in the series for that matter. This is a definite must have for anyone who has read Kick-Ass simply for Romita’s art and the hope that this story progresses into something great. New readers beware, however, understanding this series without a background on the last can quickly become a painstakingly situation.
Overall as disappointed as I was with this issue and rate it a mere 2.5 out of 5. Despite it’s low score, however, it is a title I will continue to read because I would like to think that Millar has something huge in the works for what is to come in Dave’s future. I will give him the benefit of the doubt on this one, but, will stay wary for future letdowns.
