It’s tough being a super hero, especially when you are five and your mom is lame enough that she will not let you wear your super hero cape to the first day of school. Or that dad is so busy that he won’t pay attention to you while he is BBQing and you are levitating the dog in the back yard. The angst, the trauma, and then like all kids they grow up and even weirder things happen to you as you age and hit puberty. Then you meet an awesome chick and you fall in love for the first time, then go fight crime with her because she is awesome. It is easy to get lost in the families because no one seems to notice the superpowers, but they should because they are real.
This is a very different story, but different in an awesome way that brings you right into the story and relentlessly does not let you go. What do you do if you were a kid that was ignored all the way through life, and then what do you do when you fall into your first love with the illegitimate daughter of a super hero. A super hero who will not acknowledge his kid, imagine the child support on that one if mom goes to Maury and gets a DNA test, now that is a Maury I would like to see “which super hero is the father of my baby?”. The awesome part is that super powers are genetic, so Bobbi has some pretty interesting super powers in her own right.
Adam Wilson the author does a phenomenal job of bringing these characters to life, with real issues that some of us remember less the super powers that they get to have. Franco Viglino’s art is easy on the eyes, and fits the story line very well. Seriously if I had super powers I probably would not have been picked on as much in High School. You end up caring about the characters, which is important, you care, you read more, you get lost in the story line, you crash emotionally and mentally when it is over with. You want to know more, learn more, experience more in this comic book. This is probably in my top 10 list of comic books I have read this year, and will be added to my physical collection as soon as I can find a reasonably priced copy of it. I usually do not find myself as engaged with a comic book as I did with this one. It is that good.
215 Ink is bringing some of the best comic books to market lately, and this is a spectacular example of what they are doing. Don’t just go by the digital copy, go by the physical copy. Rating this 5 of 5 stars, and in my top 10 list for the year. Yah it is that good a read.
