Have you ever felt like you weren’t important? All your friends are out to back stab you? Do you live a mundane life, have a horrible job and constantly surround yourself with assholes? If you answered yes to any of these questions than “Wanted” just may be the comic you’re looking for.
Meet Wesley Gibson. A twenty four year old who is popping more pills than anyone you or I might know for self-diagnosed problems. His girlfriend can’t help but cheat on him with his best friend, and he goes to work from nine to five to sit in a cubicle and get yelled at by his boss. Not only that, but his father left him and his mother when he was only eighteen weeks old. Someone dug Wesley a hole, threw him in it, and now he can’t get out (figuratively speaking).
Realizing he needs to make a big change and get out of this rut, a young woman named Fox introduces herself. After practically taking Wesley hostage, she gives him the opportunity of a life time, a chance to make things right for himself, a chance to change. The Fraternity. Could this be what Wesley needs? A Meta-Human Criminal Network. Running crime since nineteen eighty six, super heroes are no longer a concern and they want Wesley to take his dead fathers place. The Fraternity could just be the source of strength that Wesley needs to change his life and stand up for himself.
Now I must say this comic book is absolutely phenomenal. J.G. Jones does an excellent job bringing this story to life. He found a great balance between keeping things real, and animated which is perfect for the cast of villains created.
After reading through this issue I get a strong feeling that Millar wanted everyone to be able to connect to Wesley’s character on some level. Everyone struggles with life, and runs into problems, and it’s up to us to find the strength to overcome.
This is an outstanding read and in my opinion some of Millar’s best work. His ability to tell such an outlandish tale whilst still making it highly relatable is commendable. If you have never been graced with the privilege to read Wanted since its long since passed release, give it a shot. You won’t regret it.
