Weird Zombie Horror #1 from Black Ship Books is a collection of three zombie shorts “Home”, “Miasma”, and “I’m the Man” from writers Mark Bertonlini, Alex DeGruchy, and Michael Allen, featuring artwork from Lee Lightfoot and Mike Kennedy.
The first short entitled “Home” revolves around a family looking for a safe place to call home in the midst of a zombie invasion. This story suffers from lack of content without any information on family it is hard to feel for them with zero attachment created. As quick, as it starts the story ends causing it feel more like a brainstorming session than a complete short story. If the author would of spent more time showing us the families struggle and less time summarizing it this could have been a really interesting short.
Next, we have a story called “Miasma” about a Doctor who is on the search for answers to why so many mothers and babies pass away in the clinic he works in. Overwhelmed with guilt after discovering the cause he finds himself haunted by the ghosts of patience’s who died at the clinic driving him to complete madness. First off, this story is very loosely in the zombie genre only in terms of the ghosts that haunt the doctor look similar to the zombies from the previous story. The story itself once again is total nonsense and while this story has a lot more of content than the last its unfortunately terrible.
Finally, we have “I’m the Man” about a young lonely man who suddenly finds himself in the middle of an epidemic that only affects males. Now he may very well be the last man on Earth not looking to simply eat the flesh of females causing him to start to feel like the ultimate ladies man. While this story is not all that great either it is still loads better than the previous two, but honestly that is sort of like comparing explosive diarrhea to uncontrollable vomiting. The artwork is improved ten fold but is nowhere near enough to save this book from the nearest trash bin.
It is clear from the start that this is just another hunk of media trying to cash in on the zombie craze. Uninspired, boring, and bad writing combined with equally bland artwork, I find no reason for anyone to bother with this comic. Easily this is one of the worse “zombie” themed books I have ever picked up.
