Jennifer Blood from Dynamite Entertainment written by legendary Garth Ennis is an interesting twist on the vigilante justice sub genre. The story revolves around a super mom by the name of Jennifer the picture perfect image of your stereotypical alpha mom. By day, she cooks, cleans, sews, and helps with homework and such but at night that all changes. Jennifer transform from soccer mom to a highly trained assassin hitting the streets to dish out justice in a brutal and unforgiving manner.
The first half part of the issue does a great job at painting Jennifer as the perfect mom and wife. The queen of the suburbs who always keeps a smile on her families face, adding a nice level of depth to her character and perfect setting up the twist. Another thing that really adds to her character is the little tick the creator gave her where she has a habit of saying “honestly” after telling rather elaborate but true stories or after making a mind blowing yet honest comment, it may be a small detail but it is one more fact that makes her such an interesting character.
By the time, the bombshell is dropped that Jennifer is also a vigilante by night you are already attached to her character and interested in the story. As regular readers know by now my favorite type of comics have to be those revolving around vigilante justice. Batman, The Crow, Scorn, I love vigilante justice and crime/noir genre tales in general. Jennifer Blood is a stunning example of a solidly written and exquisitely illustrated story of vigilance and street justice. If you love these story of stories as much as I do than I guarantee you will exceedingly enjoy this comic.
Do not let Jennifer’s wholesome image fool you, once it is time to get down to business she uses extreme force. This leads to some very graphic and gory action sequences that quickly let you know she knows exactly what she is doing and does it well. I love the way she analyzes situations even during the heat of battle in a way teaching the reader how to be a effective assassin while show boating her in-depth knowledge on the topic of combat and survival emphasizing the importance of strong recon before taking action.
I plan to check out further issues of this series and recommend it to any fans out there of gritty crime dramas or stories focusing on vigilante justice. After finishing this 40page intro issue, I find myself highly looking forward to my next look into the double life of Jennifer and her quest for justice.
