This had to have been the most interesting interview of the day in many ways. You rarely see black history in comic books, and Joel has started collecting many stories about black history into comics. Under the strange fruits comics label, it is interesting to see how black history has influenced American history. Not just as slaves or the outcome of slavery, but in total, the entire picture of American history is linked to the individual successes and failures of black history. Gill focuses on the little known, the obscure, rather than the big brand names in black history. Magicians, softball players, communities in Maine, and other lesser known stories that are as powerful and as meaningful as the story of Martin Luther King.
He has some amazingly good comic books out there, and they are worth hunting down. He self publishes so they won’t be found in any major store, but the influence of his stories against the rich tapestry of American history are worth finding and reading.
