Time Traveler Ai
Story: Ai Ljima
Art: Takeshi Takebayashi
Printed by CPM
Back in the day, yes just as Anime was going mainstream, Central Park Media was one of the coolest printers out there for comic book format manga. CPM along with a lot of other anime/manga companies are no longer with us, but their legacy lives on in the copies of their remaining works out there that can still be found. Time Traveler AI is one of those richly understated manga comic books from back in the day. The comic book heroine was loosely based on the shape of Japanese adult film star Ai Ljima who passed in 2008, along with some seriously funny gag lines throughout the series.
There were 21 comics in the whole series and it is well worth checking out, occasional nudity, lots of humor, and some interesting situations to back all this stuff up makes for an interesting series to read. Of course you can also try to pick up the trades if you are not interested in the comic books, but you miss a lot of the more interesting covers.
The premise of the series involves time travel, a super sexy woman, and some of the more interesting personalities in history. Ai gets to meet most of the luminaries of their ages, all the while being pursued by the standard anime bad guy who comes in to kick butt, but for unspecified reasons other than you need to have a lot of violence when time traveling. They obviously took some of the design concepts from some of the earlier doctor who to make some of the story lines work, and that is ok. Not for kids, you get the occasional bout of nudity and people keep on shedding clothing like it was burning them, but for adults, there are some seriously good times and a huge giggle factor. There are also some jaw dropping moments to go along with it as again the main star drawn to the specifications of a Japanese adult film star.
The series is surprisingly easy to find online but not so easy in stores. If you have a thing for some of the older anime this is a series that is well worth picking up and getting comfortable with. It is hard to find the full set, but there are enough sellers of this title that you can build your own set of Time Traveler AI. Well worth getting, and if you really love early anime, this mature readers only comic book is well worth investigating.
