This is the first issue of a seven issue miniseries based upon the 1995 film by the same name. Se7en focuses on each of Doe’s victims from the film starting with gluttony, a tale that revolves around a morbidly obese man who refuses to change his ways no matter how negative they are affecting his overall life. As a big fan of the film, I find this comic book adaptation to be a flawless representation that should be read by all fans of the film and horror comics in general.
With so many up in arms when it comes to the subject of comic books franchises being turned into feature films. I find the large number of successful and well-done adaptations of films into comics to be perfect proof that both are viable transformations. In addition, to me it proves that it can also be done in a way that fully captures the original stories persona without ruining it for diehard fans but also retaining an openness for new comers to a franchise.
If you had not seen the film before and picked up this mini series, you would not find yourself lost. However, if you are a fan of the film picking up the comics you will find yourself in for a real treat with added tidbits of information that will further add to their experience with the movie. The imagery does a brilliant job at recreating the atmosphere of the film, each panel the perfect blend of dark colors and gritty, grimy scenes of horror. Zenescope never fail to impress me when it comes to their adaptations of well-known horror franchises.
High quality writing and artwork come together to create an extremely entertaining reading experience that should please fans of the film and random readers who may not be familiar with the motion picture. Se7en is an amazing story no matter what format you choose to ingest it in if you have not been exposed to this dark and twisted world then do yourself a favor and pick the comics and a copy of the movie. I would recommend watching the film first then going back and reading the comics for the extra backstory and details, it provides for the best experience.
