Fairytales Nursery Rhymes Re-Mix
Mature Readers
Written and illustrated by: G. Sportelli
Released by: Sportelli
This…this is one of the “comics” that has no plot or story or anything else to it, it’s just an excuse for G. Sportelli to showcase his art style of drawing women with big butts and breasts…and little else. It’s not something that I would normally pick up, or pay for, or read because I like to get something out of a comic and this one just doesn’t cut it for me.
It’s a stretch to say that these are nursery rhymes re-mixed as all Sportelli has really done is drawn the characters (even some of the male ones) as mostly naked women. And you can only tell that they’re a certain character because he gives the page the title as “Alice in Wonderland” or “Thumbelina.” There’s very little writing in the issue and what words there are, are just short snippets from the worlds that the “characters” come from, such as a couple of sentences from Alice in Wonderland story. And sometimes that’s hidden in the background with the characters and other design elements hiding it.
The artwork isn’t great either as Sportelli lacks the ability to make it feel real. He has a basic concept of how the human figure should work and look, but it’s clear that he lacked a model when adding shading and depth to the characters. The shading in many places is so poor, that the arms look like straight up pipes, they don’t have elbows or the little indentations that make them look like arms. In addition, the characters are just lines on the page with no emotion and no depth to the people he’s depicting. You can’t even tell that they have individuality as the only real identifying clue on most of the characters are tattoos that are supposed to relate to their names. The only part of this comic that’s slightly interesting is the digital process that he uses to create every other page where he blends his own artwork with other images (hopefully ones that aren’t copyrighted) and even these in some places aren’t great as he throws too much into them.
I can’t really say that I would recommend this to anyone unless they like pinup girls. And frankly I’ve seen better artwork for that then what’s here for that. Basically this is supposed to be showcase piece for an artist and while he probably has an audience for it, I’m not it.
Yeah I wasn’t blown away by this guy’s work either. Well at least its not just me…
no it’s not just you – some people like it – but I think given the format that people were expecting more. I think it is hard to have an art book that has the look and feel of a comic book.
Some people are going to love it, and like George said on your earlier entry, they will try to find him anyways.
