Author: Multiple Anthology
Publisher: Asylum Press
I don’t know if you have had the opportunity to ever pick up a copy of Aslym of Horrors, a two part serialization of some of the coolest themes in horror comic writing, but if you do get the chance, yeah you want to get these. This is an anthology edition, which sadly is a dying breed in comics, but when you get some of the best writers and artists in the industry involved with a comic book, then you really are not going to go wrong with this one. The first issue has 13 (yeah I know a cliché really) stories including Frank Forte, Kevin Coldren, Kudranski, Skeuloski and Billy George. The anthology covers a broad range of story lines just to keep people reading and happy.
You get satanic death stories, train rides that remind me of some of the early 1980’s slasher films about trains and death, obsession, madness, with a bucketful of creepy gore and twists that will make most horror comic book fans happier than they have been in a while. It is hard to pick out just one story line that makes the entire book; all are strong in their own way adding to the whole, rather than just trying to sum up the parts of this comic book. There are a few weak moments, but Asylum press has put together a tour de force on this one, and the editing is brilliant as the stories flow into each other allowing the reader to not miss a beat. That is one of the more common issues with anthologies is that it seems more like a chopped up movie script than a flowing story line, but you do get an awesomely cool flowing story line in this one.
Just about most people into the horror comic book scene will like this one as there is truly something for everyone here. That is what makes this a totally fun read, with me wanting to go get the second edtion of this short lived series. I wish there were more anthologies like this, but there is almost no market for anthology style comic books anymore. Overall though, I am going to rate this comic five of five stars, well drawn, excellent story lines, and overall a gritty edgy comic book that is a rare find in the current market. It looks like this series was more a labor of love than trying to make money off it. That alone is refreshing; it is well worth adding to your horror comic book collection.
