In the finial issue of 30 Days of Night: Bloodsucker Tales, we have the deranged Dr. Saxon turned into a vampire as Goodis and his friends storm the room to rescue Billy and Maggie lead to a very gore soaked and violent end to the run. We also given a very grindhouse feeling conclusion of the “Juarez” story that I want to avoid going into for spoiler sakes because I really enjoyed the way it came together in the end.
After reading this story arc in both single-issue format and collection format I have to admit that even the second time through I found myself entertained and sucked into the atmosphere created in both “Bloodsucker Tales” and “Juarez”. Over the last couple, months I read huge chunk of the 30 Days of Night books and quickly found myself completely obsessed with the characters and in obtaining as much backstory on each of them as humanly possible.
Steve Niles is by far one of the most talented writers in the comic business these days and I have always been drawn to his gritty and unapologetic writing style, match that up with the art of Ben Templesmith and you have a win-win situation every time. Each of the 30 Days of Night story arcs I have read have all been top notch with my two favorites being “Red Snow” and “Bloodsucker Tales” I can not recommend this series enough for horror fans out there who miss the days when vampires only wanted to either eat you or turn you into one of them instead of trying to hold onto a complicated relationship with you.
During my second read through of “Bloodsucker Tales”, I started to notice how video game friendly this story arc appears. I think this franchise could easily be adapted into a survival horror style game.
If you are late to the party with 30 Days of Night run out and pick up a few books and settle in for a great horror ride filled with ample amounts of blood and gore, well written connecting story arcs, beautiful artwork, and a endless cast of memorable characters you will find yourself feeling for and becoming authentically attached to.
