The finish issue of the original run of 30 Days of Night that features a very memorable and emotional end sequence between Eben and Stella that builds the groundwork for the Eben and Stella book, I will not soon forget Eben uttering the simple phrase “I can smell your blood”.
To be honest I was not a big fan of this series my first time through but after reading some prequels and sequel stories and then returning to the original I walk away with a whole new level of respect and attachment to 30 Days of Night. I think my biggest issue with the series came from the motion picture I highly disliked it and I think it caused me to associate that feeling with the comic book world as well for a long time. Then recently I started reading some of the books due to a love for the writing style of Steve Niles and a love for Ben Templesmith’s artwork.
I am very pleased that I gave this series a second chance because it really is honestly one of the best horror sub genre books ever created in terms of continuously spot on and high quality story arcs that all seem to come together in some way in completely plausible ways. One of my favorite features about the series actually is their ability to maintain a connection to each story arc no matter how many different books they release it truly is a note worthy feat in the world of comics where franchises are known for jumping the shark multiple times often leading to a reboot.
One thing I will recommend to new readers of the franchise do yourself a favor and pick these up in book format and save yourself some space and sanity they are far easier to digest in big servings and tracking down each single issue can turn into a total nightmare. In addition, the book volumes all have awesome covers that look nice on a shelf in my opinion.
If you have been on the fence for one reason or another its time to take the dive and check out 30 Days of Night it has become a horror comic legend for good reason and is a great showcase of the writing talent of Steve Niles one of my all time favorite comic book authors.
