Issue #65 entitled The Last Mermaid tells a story that everyone should recognize immediately. Tarot and Raven find themselves kidnapped after a group of Merfolk rise from their reflection pool and drag them back inside teleporting them to the southern coast. As Tarot and Raven arrive, they are overwhelmed by a rancid smell, as they are lead to a terrible site miles of fish and animals overtaken by oil suffocated and destroyed by the careless hand of man. It is also here that Tarot and Raven discover a beautiful mermaid covered in the sludge and clearly on her death bed, the mermaid shares the story of how her kind had been destroyed by the oil spill and the chemicals introduced to the water to “fix” things and fills in Tarot and Raven on the reason they have been summoned.
This issue is beyond clever and perfectly conveyed the seriousness of pollution and its effects. The destruction of Mother Nature is the destruction of our kind and every other species we share the planet with how long will we allow money hungry corporations to put the world we all have to share in jeopardy for personal gain? Just imagine how many living creatures lost their lives due to the latest oil spill? Sit down and really consider how much damage was done to the ecosystem and for what?
The Last Mermaid has to be one of the best issues I have read to date and it goes to show just how impressive this series really is. Not only do they give us erotica, horror, drama, romance, and comedy, but also they tackle very serious topics and always treat them with nothing but respect and honestly. Every species has its purpose every cog in the wheel does its job yet we continue to push many species into extinction never second-guessing the effect it will have down the line. I highly respect any artist that uses their medium to gain awareness and ask you to go out and pick up this issue and show your support to this wonderful indie comic and the messages it contains.
A very emotional issue that I will not soon forget issue #65 of Tarot: Witch of The Black Rose is one that all fans should proudly own.
