In this issue of 30 Days of Night: Bloodsucker Tales Billy has just made the turn from human to vampire and has been approached by some local boys in blue who demand to know why he is covered in buckets of blood. After the strange confrontation with the unknown police officer, Brian Goodis finds himself baffled but what happened and determined to figure it out leading him to stumble upon a step into the right direction in the form of Stella’s book 30 Days of Night depicting the original attack on Barrow.
Meanwhile Lex Nova finds himself pulling a nail infused baseball bat out of the side of his face a present from the restaurant owners “boyfriends” as the Zero Family Circus continue to wreak havoc across Juarez, Mexico. Lex Nova pays a visit to a preacher while the local police department find themselves in dire need of solving the case before more businesses decide to pull out of the area due to the horrific murders.
I love this run of 30 Days of Night as I said prior after reading this entire story arc in collection form it is one of my favorite storylines from the series. “Dead Billy Dead” gives me flashbacks to when I use to play Vampire: The Masquerade another piece of vampire media that I quickly latched onto also due to its often gritty city backdrops filled with hustlers, criminals, and more than often punk rockers.
“Juarez” features one of my members of undead from 30 Days of Night in the form of homicidal and ultra psychotic Bingo the clown a violent force of nature that makes the infamous Pogo seem like a loveable children’s character from a fairytale. The insane level of brutality Bingo displays is mind blowing and does a perfect job at showing the more primal and cutthroat side shared by many of the vampire race a much needed reminder that not every vampire sees their predicament as a curse but rather a fully embraced gift of superiority to the human race.
Going back and reading these as single issues after reading the entire run in two or three sittings in collection form is interesting because even though I literally just finished this story I find myself completely enthralled in the story and completely entertained through out each page a testament to the high quality of this story arc and the franchise in itself.
