Issue #64 of Tarot: Witch of The Black Rose revolves around the character Licorice Dust the girlfriend of Boo, who has become sick and tired of being ignored by Boo while she is off having sex with Tarot. Licorice decides to confront both Tarot and Tarot’s boyfriend Jon aka Skeleton Man leading to some humors high school drama.
I love this issue for the following reasons, for starters before I even got past the first page I started to notice many “Easter eggs” of sorts in the background. Nods to Kung Fu, Bruce Lee, and more via the background, I absolutely love when artists do such things both in comics and in films. I am the type of reader who after finishing a panel likes to really eye it up and down and make sure I am not missing even the smallest of details.
Secondly this issue cracked me up I really enjoy issues of Tarot: Witch of The Black Rose that take a step back from serious topics for a moment and gives the readers some laughs. The dialog between Licorice Dust and Jon are hilarious and feel like moment out of Saved by the Bell. Jim Balent is one hell of a writer and his ability to cover so many different genres within one series is never anything less than remarkable.
The skirmish between Tarot and Licorice Dust was also very amusing, two powerful beings engaged in a catfight of epic proportions. Anger infused with a degree of sexual tension cause this particular battle a very complex and engaging whirlwind of emotions. The writing in the issue perfectly portrays the ample amount of feelings and thoughts racing through Tarots head during the conflict and really showcases the writer’s ability to accurately portray human emotion and feelings.
When all is said and done this issue of Tarot: Witch of The Black Rose, is a very fun read and ended up being one of my favorite issues thus far. Entitled appropriately as “Stay Away From My Girlfriend!” this is one issue you do not want to miss out on. Anger, jealously, lust, humor, what more could you ask for in an issue of this amazing indie title.
