Issue #61 of Tarot: Witch of The Black Rose makes the franchises 10th year anniversary and finds Tarot seeking out the aid of Hildegard Firebraid and Bellflare Hearthstone to repair her armor once again. Deciding they had time to kill Tarot tells the tale behind how her first set of armor was destroyed way back when she was taking her test to become The Swordmaiden to the Goddess. Part one of a two issue story arc looking back to path Tarot took to become the infamous Swordmaiden these issues are a must read for fans of the series.
I love origin stories and backstory heavy issues of comics, I have spent the last few months falling in love with this franchise and have found myself wondering how Tarot came to be the powerful force she is. Finally getting to see Tarot back before she was the Swordmaiden and just another Black Rose witch was a dream come true. Learning more about her armor and the sword, she wields put a monstrously huge smile across this comic book nerds face. This issue has also helped me understand the relationship of Tarot and her sister Raven more clearly and the damage caused by the death of their father.
Once again, this issue features spectacular artwork it never ceases to amaze me the realistic use of light and shadows found in these comics. I really dug the look of the fallen witches that Tarot comes across during her test; the transformation heir faces go though was awesome. It is hard to go into great detail about all the factors that make this such an important and entertaining issue without going into the realm of spoilers. Instead, I will simply say this if you are looking to get into this series and want a current starting point this is your chance and if I were you I would take it. This issue and the next issue would be a great starting point for new readers to jump aboard. This story arc is also a treat for long time fans that cannot get enough backstory when it comes to Tarot and the mystical world she lives in.
I’m really looking forward to reading the conclusion to this adventure and gaining a better understanding of all the trails and tribulations that Tarot has went through to become the witch she is today.
