Issue #57 of Tarot: Witch of The Black Rose is the third part of a four-part story arc called “Shades of Magick”. Tarot finds herself drugged and chained to a pillar left as a sacrifice to a water nymph. Meanwhile, Tarots familiar Pooka has been captured by a fairy that he has been known to torment for many years. Now it is up to Tarot to find a way out of her bind and to rescue her beloved familiar before it is too late.
How can you go wrong with a comic book that features cupcakes with razor sharp teeth, with that being said the artwork in this issue is absolutely beautiful. A very visually stimulating issue featuring some cool character designs, my favorite being the water nymph that Tarot is being sacrificed to. And any issue featuring the adorable Pooka is much appreciated, the flying chipmunk familiar equally adorable and creative.
The world of witchcraft is presented in such an interesting and respectful manner its hard not to fall in love with this series. I think of it as Harry Potter for adults due to its never-ending army of creative characters and awe-inspiring locations. While its take on the pagan religion is more realistic than Harry Potter of course, I compare the two with the highest degree of respect with no intent to be little pagan faith. I have had many friends who are pagan ask me about the series and once they are exposed to it most have become totally hooked on it and now ask me where they can obtain back issues.
I will say that this issue was a bit hard for me to follow at first but to be fair this is the third part of a four part series that I have not read any other issues of. However, even from the standpoint of being tossed into the middle of a story arc I still found the issue enjoyable and was able to put together loose ends and understand it in the end. The franchise does a great job at making it accessible to new readers at any given time without requiring them to pick up a huge back library of issues. Although most will choose to opt for those back issues regardless once they become addicted to the world of Tarot.
