Issue #52 of Tarot: Witch of The Black Rose is the conclusion of the three part story arc “So Mote It Be” starting exactly where we last left off with my personal favorite character of the series Skeleton Man coming to the aid of his love Tarot. Unlike last issues epic battle between Tarot and Lord Thornwic that shifted panel to panel the fight between Skeleton Man and Lord Thornwic is very one sided and is more of a serve beating than a battle of any sorts.
The first issue of the series I was ever exposed too featured Skeleton Man and it was this characters design that first drew me into the series. His costume design, heroic nature, and ability to simply decimate anything standing before him makes him a very likeable character and his mysterious nature peaks your interest as a reader wanting to know more about the man behind the mask.
The romantic dialog presented in this issue is a testament to how high the standards of the writing featured in the series always remain, as I have said many times before the best way to describe Jim Balent’s writing style at times is simply poetic. Its not surprise that the series has a very large female reader base my guess would be due to the writing ability of Mr. Balent and his ability to portray females as strong independent characters without losing the soft romantic side to their nature.
Each time you pick up an issue of Tarot: Witch of The Black Rose you honestly have no clue which genre you will be diving into from issue to issue. Sometimes you are given a series dramatic story arc, other times action packed battles, or perhaps a humor filled relaxing issue, and then they always well down romance infused love story that the series does oh so well.
The perfect way to end “So Mote It Be” two lovers entangled in each others embrace painting the perfect picture of the strong relationship between Tarot and Jon (Skeleton Man) once again the entire staff behind this series has left me with my mind blown and entertained to the highest degree. Tarot: Witch of The Black Rose is the perfect example of the great things being done within the indie comic scene and why you should support smaller publishers who are going above and beyond to create some beautiful franchises.
