Welcome to the world of the 10th Muse. If this is your first journey into her world take a seat and hold on, because it’s a fast moving world. If you’re coming back enjoy an action packed issue with new villains appearing to distract and occupy our heroine. As for myself, this is the first “real” issue I’ve picked up of the story line and its interesting and wild ride.
We begin our story in a courtroom, with the DA Emma Sonnet prosecuting a man for murder in San Francisco. Meanwhile, a group of mysterious players, each named and dressed after a deck of cards, watches the 10th Muse upon a video screen…and plotting to kill her. Back at home Emma is resting and catching up with her parents…before the mysterious card gang announces on TV that they want the 10th Muse of they’ll set off a bomb. Emma dashes out to do battle in her role as the 10th Muse. She narrowly avoids defeat this night and escapes only to resume it the next day, defeating three of the villains, with only the King and Queen still remaining. And then…Trident appears at the door. Hurt and asking for help.
I like the artwork in this issue. The colors are nice and bright, and although they draw all of the women with big chests and looking beautiful in every panel…it’s not bad. And there’s actually variety in the characters. The main characters granted always look young and beautiful, but the supporting characters can be old, too skinny, a bit of extra weight, and come from a lot of different backgrounds. It’s a nice change of pace to see in a series. There’s a lot of depth to the way the characters are drawn and the backgrounds are never overpowering, which tends to be a fault in some series like this. Overall it’s excellent artwork.
The writing in this issue is ok…it’s not exactly the easiest story to jump into though as the first few pages alternate between a lawyer in the courtroom and a heroine, the 10th Muse fighting, but it isn’t until later in the issue that we find out that they’re the same person. Once we get past that though the storyline is easy enough to follow and it’s pretty action packed and constantly moving. I did find it interesting that at one point she mentions that she knows her body, but she doesn’t…seemingly saying that her powers are new which is interesting. I also found it interesting that the villains are basically the Batman group, the Royal Flush Gang. They seem to be very similar in style and powers.
This is one of those series that I’d like to read more of and know what the back-story is to the character. For example, how did she get her powers? Where does she live and what’s her purpose for being in the city? Things like that…I would tentatively recommend this series to a fan of Superman or Wonderwoman as it has a similar vibe to the story and I look forward to finding out more about this mysterious 10th Muse.
