After reading Grimm Fairy Tales: Escape From Wonderland #3, my second round with Grimm Fairy Tale series from Zenescope, I have developed a new found respect and interest in the franchise. I have really grown to love the interesting ways the artists manage to turn the world of wonderland into a landscape that even Clive Barker would be proud of. These books are true eye candy for those who love bright vivid colors and detailed illustrations. I have found myself analyzing each panel after I have read the text drooling over all the tiny details to ensure I miss nothing.
The interoperations of the famous characters of wonderland have to be my favorite part about this particular run of the Grimm Fairy Tales series. In the last issue I was blown away by the appearance of the Cheshire cat and in this issue we get to see Cheshire in action in a battle against the lovely Calie, a truly memorable battle. Grimm Fairy Tales: Escape From Wonderland #3 amps up the blood this time around a nice surprise for a new reader like myself who wasn’t not aware of the level of action and gore that take place in these fairy tale reimagining’s. The series is starting to exhibit the same qualities that made me fall in love with Heavy Metal and Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose, the perfect blend of fantasy, sex, and horror rolled up into one perfect nerdgasm inducing package of pure awesome.
The writing once again is solid and the story moves along at a nice steady pace and was a lot easier to follow this time around reading it directly after issue #2. I still believe that this series would be somewhat easy for a reader to jump into if they are somewhat familiar with the original story of Alice in Wonderland, although there are many differing factors in the stories main plot there are enough similarities that a new reader should be able to piece together what’s going on within an issue.
After reading two issues from Zenescope’s Grimm Fairy Tale series I’m officially a fan and plan on going back and checking out some of the other worlds they have chosen to retell using their very original and unique methods. If you have not given these comics a chance yet because they come off to sleazy then I recommend you sit down with an issue or two and give it a honest go, I believe you will be pleasantly surprised.
nice cheescake cover on the bottom of this one – did you get that off the zenescope site or is that fan art?
