Grimm Fairy Tales: Beyond Wonderland #0 is an special preview issue of the Beyond Wonderland series, that explains the situation of Carroll Ann Liddle or as previous readers of the Wonderland franchise know her as Calie. Each night the dreams are the same she is taken back to that strange destination called Wonderland, where her brother Johnny (Who appears to of taken over the role of the Mad Hatter) haunts her reminding her that he is trapped in Wonderland because of her.
There is not a whole lot to talk about with this issue, as it is only about six pages long as far as main story content goes. As a new reader to the franchise I did enjoy the brief bit of back-story given about Johnny and why his sister Calie sent him to Wonderland. Also in this special issue you are given a preview of another Grimm Fairy Tales series called 1001 Arabian Nights: The adventures of Sinbad which oddly enough is longer than the Beyond Wonderland content something that disappointed me a bit. I am all for tossing in a bonus preview but I should not be longer than main comic content in my opinion.
I would of like to of been given more backstory leading into the debut of issue #1 of the series instead of the random preview of 1001 Arabian Nights: The Adventures of Sinbad, as someone who is still new to the series it would have been a treat to get some more info on the characters and how they fit into the revamped storyline. However, the small big of information we are given is interesting and I found it very helpful in further understanding the previous two Wonderland related comics I had read.
Grimm Fairy Tales: Beyond Wonderland #0 is successful at completing its intended goal of sucking you into the world and making sure you pick up the next issue. It creates an interesting picture of things to come and left me wanting more, I only wish it had a little more Beyond Wonderland and a little less 1001 Arabian Nights: The Adventures of Sinbad as interesting as it was. I look forward to reading future issues of Beyond Wonderland and other Grimm Fairly Tales from Zenescope.
