Probably the coolest Hack Slash side track you will read, and surprisingly it comes from Zenescope. Zenescope is generally not known for producing any Hack Slash at all. It used to belong to Devils Due Publishing, and now has its new home over at Image comics. This is a comic book whose opening line is “Didn’t you learning anything from Horror Movies?” and carries on throughout with a campy humor that is hard to miss or beat. This is a 48 page comic book making allowing for a longer story line which is unusual with horror comic books.
The book simply asks the question, “Can the Living Corpse and Cassie and Vlad stop beating the crap out of each other long enough to deal with the demonic menace?”. Not likely, but then that is the fun of this comic book, lots of violence against the undead. The undead are not a protected category of people right now so it is fair game throughout this comic book.
Excellent drawing and comedic overtones helps this comic book go well over the top when it comes to delivering hard core horror with a comedic expression that will have the average reader flashing back to some of the odd ball horror movies from the 1980’s through today. B movies have nothing on this comic, making it well worth reading and truly enjoyable.
Cassie, Vlad, and the Living Corpse do battle with each other and a super witch reminiscent of the swamp people style overtones. Add to that the setting is in New Jersey with the Jersey Devil and a town named Pine Barrens combined with a demonic menace this is a total win. There is an extra story in the comic from Josh Medors that adds to the horror comic overtones. Overall a truly enjoyable comic book that I wish had seen more copies coming. Harder to find, but well worth finding when you get there.
Rating this one 5 of 5 stars, I really got into it and wish there were more comics like this coming from Zenescope. This is a decidedly good sidetrack, and maybe we will get lucky and see more coming from this title series.
