GRIMM FAIRY TALES PRESENTS: ESCAPE FROM WONDERLAND COVER GALLERY
Published by: Zenescope
Art: Various
Well, this is strange. I’m all for cover galleries as they’re great to browse through, especially if you’re a fan of variants. Reviewing one though, rather awkward. I’m fairly unfamiliar with the Wonderland series of books, aside from the one issue that I’ve reviewed here, and I definitely have never read a book in the ESCAPE FROM WONDERLAND series. That said, based on the cover art of these books, I’m pretty much sold.
If you’ve ever seen a cover for any of Zenescope’s Wonderland related books than you know to expect one thing: scantily clad, voluptuous women. Well, if you’re expecting that from this gallery than you should be pleased. Nearly every single image here features copious cleavage and enough bare leg (and…upper leg) to make Cher blush. Basically, this is everything a 13 year old boy could want in comic art. Minus tentacle rape, naturally.
The art is pretty great, for the majority of the covers. There are a variety of different artists, and subsequently art forms, represented here. Many of these artists are Zenescope regulars at this point and they definitely have their style down. There is a lot of detail in many of these images, especially covers that include many characters. The characters are also worth mentioning. My first experience with the Wonderland series was awkward in that none of the Alice In Wonderland characters were present. Here, that is not the case at all. More than a couple Alice In Wonderland staples are featured, including The Mad Hatter who appears in various ways. The girls are really the highlight, and are present on pretty much every cover, but I’m happy to see others making an appearance as well.
Reviewing a cover gallery is strange. It is not something that you can recommend someone to outright pick up unless they are already an ardent follower of the given series. With that said, I can’t see any reason that Wonderland fans would not be pleased with this. You get images of all of the covers as well as variants and there is a sneak peek at a prologue to the series in the final pages. All things considered it seems entirely deserving of the $4 price tag that it goes for. However, this material could also be contained in the trade paperback that collects the series’ entire run, so shop accordingly.
This is probably one of my favorite zenescope books ever, I love the comic book covers that Zenescope comes out with, and cover galleries like this just show me the comics I have to go get so I have all the covers. I know I am not alone in this obsession. This is probably one of the more clever ways that comic book companies sell more copies, more than one cover.
