Zombies Vs Cheerleaders: Pep Rallies and Body Tallies, begins with a nefarious plan in the form of a student named Buddy Fox creating a elixir of sorts in hopes of using it to turn the entire high school football team into brain craving zombies as revenge for them always picking on him. Professor Mulkins discovers the boy in the lab working on his formula and after mocking young Buddy becomes his first test subject starting a zombie outbreak at the high school that starts to spread at an alarming rate.
The best way I can describe Zombies Vs Cheerleaders: Pep Rallies and Body Tallies is Zombies Ate My Neighbors grown up and re imagined for an older crowd of fans looking for some brain munching action entwined with Mad Magazine style parody humor. The humor in this comic is where it really shines while a lot of it is your typical cliché high school humor it’s often presented to you in a very clever and ultimately funny manner separating it from other horror comedy themed comics and setting the bar rather high for the sub-genre. My personal favorite bits are the ones dealing with ditzy cheerleaders and their mixed up priorities during the zombie apocalypse that is going on all around them one of lines that really sold me on the comic was during a conversation between two cheerleaders where one says to the other “Don’t be rude, Miss smarty pants, just because you make straight C’s”. The very tongue and cheek style writing really sucked me in as a long time fan of horror comedies in other forms of media and as a kid who grew up with Mad Magazine and found myself absolutely ecstatic anytime they parodied anything horror.
The art style in Zombies Vs Cheerleaders: Pep Rallies and Body Tallies, really grabs your attention and the characters explode from the pages panel to panel, in the form of ultra vivid colors on high gloss pages turning this comic into a winning combination of solid entertaining writing and eye pleasing artwork. I really enjoyed the color palette they used with this one and the quality of the imagery really makes you feel like you are getting your money’s worth with these comics. The art style screams Saturday morning cartoon in many ways, this would make an excellent series to get the Adult Swim style cartoon treatment especially in a time where zombies have become a monstrous part of pop culture already.
Overall I really had fun with Zombies Vs Cheerleaders: Pep Rallies and Body Tallies and would recommend this to any horror fans out there looking for a few zombie fueled laughs. If you found yourself drawn into such films as Shaun of the Dead or the more recent Zombieland this just may be the next piece of zombie media you fall in love with.
snork, I love this comic – seriously funny
I found myself authentically laughing out loud while reading this one, and the bonus artwork at the end of the issue are worth purchase alone imo.
