In issue #59 of “Tarot: Witch of The Black Rose” we find Tarot, and fellow witch and Hollywood actress Tonya Kay trapped in the realm between the fairy world and the mortal world. Face to face with a being that can be best described as a cross between Medusa and an angel.
Once again I am simply blown away by the imaginative character designs and the high level of quality the illustrations and color choices displayed from panel to panel. I’m also enjoying the bits and pieces of information pertaining to the modern witch, this seems like a series that real life practitioners could enjoy as well as your common every day fan of erotic or fantasy themed comics.
Each time I sit down and read an issue of “Tarot: Witch of The Black Rose” I am taken back to my childhood when I use to watch endless marathons of films such as “Red Sonja”, “Conan the Barbarian” and “Beast master”. Worlds of armor clad vixens, magic, and never ending adventures, although Tarot is a bit more modern than those films it still has the same classic fantasy feel just more sexualized and adult themed.
There are always small details in these comics that made me smile, like Tonya Kay’s familiar being a purple stuffed teddy bear sporting a pentacle on his chest. Its small details like this that bring a sense of uniqueness to the franchise separating it from similar themed books who always seem to go the most cliché way as possible when dealing with the world of witches and witchcraft. In most series her familiar would have most likely been a black cat or something equally uninspired.
All the characters I have been exposed to thus far in “Tarot: Witch of The Black Rose” have all been distinctive and interesting to a point of always looking forward to when they will appear in the series again so you can learn a little more about who they are and their idiomatic persona’s.
As mentioned before in an earlier “Tarot: Witch of The Black Rose” review, the writing while very cheesy at times with its mixture of dime store romance and a late night T&A film, it can also be very deep and throat provoking. At times it even sounds poetic as it moves across your lips; it’s very far from your typical comic book style writing at times causing your interest to always remain peeked.
I really like this series, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a new fantasy world to get lose within. If witchcraft and magic are your cup of tea and you don’t mind the adult themes and nudity then you should give this comic series a chance. I for one will continue reading this series as long as they keep up the track record of having such intriguing characters.
